Residents of Albion will see higher fees for water services and cemetery plots following a series of unanimous votes by the Village Board of Trustees during their workshop meeting on Wednesday, June 4. The meeting, held at Village Hall, addressed a mix of financial housekeeping, personnel changes, and upcoming community events. Mayor Angel Javier Jr. was absent, but Deputy Mayor Greg Bennett joined Trustees Joyce Riley, William Gabalski, and Timothy McMurray shortly after the meeting commenced. **Water Infrastructure Costs Drive Budget Adjustments** The most significant financial action of the evening involved moving nearly $40,000 within the 2025 budget to cover urgent repairs at the Water Treatment Plant. The Board authorized the transfer of $39,630 to cover an invoice from Koester for filter repairs. To address the maintenance needs, the Board voted to approve price increases for water sampling, effective August 1. Additionally, the Board moved to adjust water administration fees effective immediately. Residents will now face a $50 fee for setting up a new account and for turning water on or off. The fee for turning water back on due to non-payment was set at $100. **Police Department Changes** The Board officially accepted the resignation of Police Officer Justyn Haines, effective May 18. To ensure the department remains fully staffed, the Board moved quickly to allow Police Chief David Mogle to begin the process of filling the full-time vacancy. During the police department report, the Board took a moment to commend the professional conduct of three officers involved in an incident on May 10. Sgt. William Francis, Sgt. Robert Wagner IV, and Officer Nathaniel Staines were acknowledged for their effective response to the matter. **Cemetery Rates and Public Hearings** Costs are also going up at Mt. Albion Cemetery. The Board approved a rate hike for cemetery services, effective the day following the meeting. A full schedule of the new rates is available at the cemetery office. In other business, the Board set a public hearing for July 9 at 6 p.m. to discuss a request from Paul and Jodi Zeppetella to change the name of Nashburn Street to "Zeppetella Way." **Community Events and Administration** Looking ahead to summer, the Board approved special event permits for several gatherings. Harvest Christian Church will host a "Family Fun Day" at Bullard Park in August, and Holy Family Parish received approval for their Lawn Fete on South Main Street, which will require the closure of West Park Street between Main and Liberty Streets. On the administrative side, the Board denied a request from a resident to remove water and sewer penalties. However, they did approve a sewer break request for Duke Properties on West State Street in the amount of $880.39. Deputy Treasurer Michelle Martin Rice was permitted to attend the 2025 Edge Conference in September for Logics software training. The Board also voted to utilize Municipal Electric and Gas for the village’s electric usage. The meeting included two executive sessions to discuss contract negotiations and adjourned at 8:22 p.m.
