Property owners in Albion with overgrown lawns or unpaid utility bills will see those debts added to their upcoming tax bills following decisions made by the Village Board Wednesday evening. At the March 11 meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously authorized the village to relevy approximately $13,300 in outstanding lawn mowing charges and $12,605 in delinquent water and sewer bills onto the 2026-2027 tax roll. The move is a standard procedure used by municipalities to recover costs for maintenance performed on private properties when owners fail to pay or when utility bills remain in arrears. According to the minutes, the lawn mowing charges affect 31 specific properties. The list includes several rental properties and limited liability companies (LLCs), with individual charges ranging from $87.50 to $2,012.50. The largest single bill—$2,012.50—was levied against a property at 231 East Avenue owned by Barron’s Realty Management, LLC. The water and sewer relevy impacts 77 properties. The largest outstanding balance in that category totals $2,696.59 and is also attributed to Oak Orchard Estates. **Summer Events Approved** Looking ahead to warmer weather, the board approved a slate of special event permits that will bring significant activity to Bullard Park. Trustees authorized permits for: * **Albion Summer Festival:** An all-day event on August 1. * **Carnival Days for Hospice:** A two-day event running July 17 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and July 18 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. * **Bounce for Bullard Youth 3on3:** A basketball tournament set for June 14. * **Harvest Christian Church Family Fun Day:** Scheduled for August 8. Additionally, the board approved a street closure for an Easter Egg Hunt on April 4, which will close East State Street from South Main Street to Platt Street. **Infrastructure and Zoning** The board approved several financial adjustments to maintain village infrastructure. * **Pump Repair:** Trustees authorized spending $24,800 from Water Treatment Plant (WTP) equipment reserves to repair a high-service pump. * **Vactor Truck:** A payment of $2,200 from Department of Public Works (DPW) equipment reserves was approved for a remote control for the village’s Vactor truck. * **Community Events:** The board moved $1,300 into reserves for the "July 3rd event." In zoning matters, the board scheduled a public hearing for March 25 at 6 p.m. to discuss changing the zoning designation for two parcels—62.19-3-35 and 62.20-2-41—from Residential (R-1) to Light Industrial (LI). The board also appointed David Warren as the new Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals. **Smoke Shop Moratorium Tabled** A discussion regarding a potential moratorium on new smoke shops in the village was tabled. Mayor Angel Javier and the board agreed to delay the topic until their next meeting on March 25 to allow time to consult with the village attorney. **Administrative Dates** The board also adjusted its meeting calendar for April. Trustees scheduled an organizational meeting for April 6, 2026, at 6 p.m. and canceled the regular meeting previously set for April 8. Trustees Greg Bennett was excused from the meeting. All votes were 4-0 in favor with Mayor Javier, Deputy Mayor Gabalski, Trustee Riley, and Trustee McMurray present.
