The Albion Village Board met briefly Monday afternoon to initiate the hiring process for a vacant position within the Department of Public Works. With the spring maintenance season approaching, Mayor Tim McMurray and Trustees Jami Allport and Kevin Sheehan gathered for a special meeting at Village Hall. The board’s primary order of business was addressing a vacancy for a laborer at the village cemetery. Trustees unanimously approved a motion to advertise the position internally first. According to the meeting minutes, the strategy is to allow current village employees to apply for the role before it is offered to the general public. If a suitable candidate is not found within the village workforce after seven days, the Clerk-Treasurer is authorized to advertise the position externally. "Moved by Trustee Allport and seconded by Trustee Sheehan to approve to allow Clerk to advertise for the Laborer position at Cemetery internally, external after the required 7 days if necessary," the minutes state. The vote carried with ayes from Mayor McMurray, Trustee Allport, and Trustee Sheehan. Trustees William Gabalski and Greg Bennett were excused from the meeting. Following the public vote, the board moved immediately into executive session at 4:09 p.m. The closed session, permitted under New York's Open Meetings Law to discuss personnel matters, lasted just over 40 minutes. The board reconvened in open session at 4:50 p.m. and adjourned one minute later. The village cemetery is a key historical and functional asset in Albion, requiring regular upkeep. The hiring of a new laborer ensures the village can maintain the grounds as the village moves toward the warmer months. Residents interested in the position should monitor the village's official postings or contact the Village Hall at 35 East Bank Street for more information as the search progresses.
