ALBION — Citing the need to address underground water loss, the Village Board of Trustees unanimously approved a series of budget adjustments Thursday evening to fund a leak detection survey. The special meeting, convened at 5:30 p.m. at Village Hall, was brief but focused on maintaining the village’s infrastructure. The board moved to appropriate $7,475 for the survey, a proactive measure to locate and repair leaks in the municipal water system. To fund the initiative without exceeding the budget, the board utilized a mix of reserves and contingency cuts. According to the meeting minutes, $1,300 will be drawn from capital water reserves. The remaining $6,175 will be taken from water fund contingency (F0.1990.0401). Additionally, a $250 decrease from the general fund contingency (A0.1990.0401) was reallocated to the village’s computer equipment line (A0.1325.0202). The vote was 3-0. Deputy Mayor Joyce Riley presided over the meeting in the absence of Mayor Angel Javier Jr. Trustees William Gabalski and Timothy McMurray were also present; Trustee Greg Bennett was absent. In other business, the board moved to support local first responders. Trustees unanimously approved a motion to distribute a formal letter of support for the Albion Joint Fire District. The correspondence will be made available to the public through the official Village website, the Orleans Hub, and the Lake Country Pennysaver. The board also handled routine equipment management for the Department of Public Works (DPW). At the request of DPW Superintendent Jay Pahura, the board voted to declare a "Bartell tamper" — a piece of construction equipment used for compacting soil, asphalt, or gravel — as surplus. By declaring the item surplus, the village is authorized to sell the equipment. The proceeds from the sale are designated to be placed into the DPW equipment reserves, a move that helps fund future vehicle or machinery maintenance and acquisitions. While the meeting was primarily focused on financial and equipment matters, the board also briefly discussed recreation hours. Discussion was held regarding a request from Community Action of Orleans & Genesee Head Start concerning the operating hours of the village splash pad. No official changes to the schedule were voted on during this session; the Village Clerk was directed to advise the agency on the matter. The special meeting was adjourned at 5:39 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees is expected to address ongoing village business as the summer season begins.
